Back To School Checklist
As GPs, we often see a rush of parents booking appointments just after school resumes and it makes sense.
New term equals new exposure to viruses, increased stress, disrupted sleep schedules, and for some kids, the return of anxiety or behaviour changes.
Whether your child is starting nursery, returning to primary school, or entering secondary school, this back-to-school period is the perfect time to make sure they’re healthy, protected, and prepared.
Here’s our 5-point GP-approved health checklist to help you do just that.
1. Book a General Health Check
Why not give your child a check-up before school starts? This would be very helpful especially if your child has:
- Ongoing medical conditions (asthma, allergies, eczema)
- Trouble with sleep, energy or concentration
- A recent illness or growth concern
- Behavioural or emotional changes
2. Review Immunizations
Make sure your child’s routine vaccinations are up to date, especially:
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
- 5-in-1 or 6-in-1 (depending on age)
- HPV (if age-eligible)
- Flu jab (especially if your child is prone to chest infections or asthma)
3. Consider a Preventive Lab Test (if needed)
If your child has been fatigued, losing appetite, or showing signs of low mood, a simple blood test can help rule out:
- Iron deficiency
- Vitamin D deficiency
- Thyroid, sugar control or other underlying health issues
4. Get Their Diet, Sleep & Routine Back on Track
Summer break tends to shift everything — bedtime creeps later, screen time goes up, and sugary snacks multiply. Now’s the time to reset:
- Re-establish bedtime 1–2 weeks before school starts
- Plan balanced lunchbox meals
- Reduce screen time and increase outdoor activity
5. Watch for Signs of Stress or Anxiety
A new term can be exciting — but also nerve-wracking, especially for children starting a new school or those who’ve struggled in previous terms.
Look out for:
- Stomach aches or headaches without a clear cause
- Mood swings, withdrawal, or irritability
- Sudden sleep issues
- Avoidance of school topics or friends
